Michigan’s film incentive caps to be raised

WEST BLOOMFIELD — A West Bloomfield entertainment attorney is seeing signs that the silver screen could soon bring in more silver to Michigan.
Ethan Bordman said Gov. Rick Snyder’s administration is raising the cap on annual state film incentives from $25 million to $50 million for the 2013 fiscal year budget.
Bordman said Snyder initially capped the incentives and lowered the percentages for film companies’ reimbursements after he arrived in office in 2011.
Although Bordman called Snyder’s original caps “pretty devastating” because they put incentives below the national average among states, he believes the most recent step is progress.
“It’s getting better with the increase in the cap,” he said, “but it certainly is a big difference from when it was in the 2009, 2010 era.”
